International Museum of Perfumery in Grasse

Reopening of the M.I.P.

After four years of renovation, the International Museum of Perfumery reopened its doors in Grasse on the 18 October 2008. The city of Grasse has completely renovated and extended the museum to cover 3500m² of surface area. The aim was to adapt to the growing demands of the perfume industry. The architect Frédéric JUNG was chosen to oversee the project which mainly concerned the rempart wall dating from the 14th century. For more information, please consult www.museesdegrasse.com
HISTORY
The perfume industry has made not only France but Grasse world famous. So it was thought only legitimate to honour its history by consecrating a museum to recount its evolution through the centuries. Inaugurated in 1989 in Grasse “the cradle of traditional perfumery” the Musee International de la Parfumerie retraces, through an exceptional collection, the history of perfume, soaps, cosmetic powders and make-up over 4000 years. Not only guardian of the memory of the perfume industry but also its partner, the museum shows all the steps in the creation of a perfume, from the harvesting to the treatment of the primary resources to the launching of the finished product. The museum incorporates three symbolic places of Grasse history: the entrance of the original perfumery Hugues-Aîné built in the 19th century, the vestiges of the 174th century Dominican convent, and the foundation wall of the town also dating from the end of the 14th century. The museum is indeed a magical voyage through perfumed dreams.
