Charming promenades in Antibes

There exist some very interesting walks and sight seeing on the Côte d’azur, especially around Antibes-Juans les pins. Let the locals who know and love their town, guide you to the best spots, often corners of paradise, not known by the average tourist.

The fort was built on the highest rock point of the peninsula Saint-Roch, 26m above sea level. Its winding road is 43m long and offers a 360° panoramic view. A reserve of four hectares of typical Mediterranean fauna and flora surround the fort. This protected reserve is the property of the “Conservatoire du Littoral” and is part of the Natura 2000 project.

The fort is in the form of a star and there is an incredible view from the of the Port Vauban and its luxury yachts, the old town and the green Cap d’Antibes. From the fort, you can walk down to the port Vauban which is the biggest marina in Europe. You can dream of living aboard small wooden sailing yachts ready to live an adventure on the high seas or living the life of absolute luxury on one of the million dollar yachts berthed in the port.

Continue your walk along the ramparts, entering through the marine door, or take one of the alley ways in the old town and admire the authentic fisherman cottages all narrow and attached to one another. Every morning, the Provencal market, a lively and colourful event, animates the old city. There are many restaurants, often with a terrace, where you can dine for any budget and often reasonably priced for good quality dishes.

Don’t forget to visit the Thuret gardens, situated in the centre of the Cap d’Antibes. There are impressive Mediterranean trees and an exceptional giant eucalyptus tree with soft and white bark. Don’t hesitate to stroke its trunk!

Staying in the centre of the Cape of Antibes, one can see the Lighthouse, La Garoupe, surrounded by a green wood. The place is beautiful with its sailors' chapel “Notre-Dame of La Garoupe “filled with icons and with models of boats. From there you can admire the landscapes surrounding the Alps (covered with snow in the winter) on one side, and on the other side, the massif of Esterel with its red rock

From the point of the Cape, follow the path “tirepoil” cut out of the rocks, to get to the small creeks where you can swim and picnic in peace, feet in the water, surrounded with the scent of the Mediterranean plants.

At the end of this path you can visit the villa Ellenroc and its formal French garden. There is also a big rose garden and an olive garden at the museum.

Continue and you will arrive at the Napoleonic Museum with its garden and its view of the islands of Lérins. From there you will reach the small port “Olivette” with its many small traditional fishing boats. You will note the villa “Aujourd’hui “, from the art deco period. Stay for the sunset, it is beautiful and romantic!   Even better, go to the Hotel Belles Rives to take a glass on the magnificent terrace in front of the sea with a thought for Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald who lived in this place in the time of their heyday. A pianist often plays at sunset. The hotel has preserved its Art deco history, and cultivates its prestigious past
